The District Chief Executive for Sunyani West, (DCE), Agnes Kusi, has revealed that the Sunyani West District currently ranks third with the highest rate of teenage pregnancy among the 27 Districts in the Bono-Ahafo region, saying this has brought with it a high rate of unsafe abortion practices. She was worried that these practices have the tendency of increasing the HIV and AIDS prevalence in the District. Madam Kusi again expressed worry that drugs and substance abuse have also been identified to be on the increase in the District and therefore appealed to Nananom, the clergy, parents and concerned adults to play their respective gate-keeping roles as well as live up to their responsibilities. Madam Kusi made these known during the Sunyani West District’s celebration of Ghana’s 58th Independence Day held at Odumase on the theme “achieving Transformation through National Unity”. The DCE called on the general public especially students to cultivate the spirit of discipline, hard work and respect for authority. She further encouraged them to take advantage of all the opportunities which the government, teachers and parents have put in place for them. She cautioned the youth against cyber-crime popularly known as “sakawa”. Madam Kusi urged Ghanaians to prioritize Ghana over any political party or religious body to enhance unity, patriotism and nationalism in the country. She entreated the general public to embrace the National Sanitation Day exercise organized on the first Saturday of each month. Awards were also given to some deserving teachers and students.
