The police on Monday clashed with some students of the Sunyani Polytechnic at the Campus when they intervened to prevent lunching of the S.R.C President, Mr Appiah Gordon by irate students, for failing to render account to the Student Body. The Brong Ahafo Police P.R.O, A.S.P Christopher Tawiah who confirmed the confrontation in an interview Develop Ghana Newspaper explained that, the police received a distress call from the school about a violent confrontation going on. According to him, the police responded quickly by dispatched men to the school to rescue the SRC President and another executive described as Project Manager, Felix Adoo. He said during the rescue some angry students tried to prevent them from lawfully carrying out their duty which resulted in a violent confrontation. The Police according to him had to use tear gas and rubber bullets to stop the mob before they managed to whisk away the two executives to safety. Aggrieved by the intervention of the police, the rampaging students marched to the police headquarters, where they proceeded to pelt the building with stones the P.R.O recounted. Some of the students sustained varied degrees of injury in the ensuing clash as the police repulsed the attack acted According to him, the police to prevent destruction to police property. The aggrieved students after leaving the police headquarters, mounted a road block on the Sunyani Berekum road unleashing terror on drivers and passengers which created a huge traffic jam. The police he said sent in re-enforcements and dispersed the students arresting 19, who were later released following an intervention by the school authorities. The student body is accusing the S.R.C President of embezzling S.R.C funds, part of it they alleged he had used to purchase a Pontiac Vibe, saloon car and lodged Vehicle, and invested the rest in some banks. They are therefore calling for a full investigation into the matter and subsequent resignation of the S.R.C Executives. A visit the Campus this morning revealed.
